Federal Government Forms JIT to Investigate Social Media Campaigns Creating Chaos

The federal government has formed a Joint Investigation Committee (JIT). The decision, revealed on Saturday, follows the Interior Ministry’s announcement days earlier about probing PTI’s alleged involvement in anti-state propaganda.

The notification, while not explicitly naming PTI, coincides with recent actions against the party, including the arrest of PTI Information Secretary Raoof Hasan. Hasan was apprehended on Monday during a raid by Islamabad police and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) at PTI's Central Office. The FIA’s cybercrime wing has charged Hasan and 11 others under various sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca), including glorification of an offense, cyberterrorism, and electronic forgery.

Physical remand for Hasan and eight others has been extended, while two women involved have been placed in judicial custody. PTI MNA Gohar Khan has suggested that the crackdown is linked to the Supreme Court’s recent order in the reserved seats case, which positions PTI as the single largest party in the National Assembly.

According to the notification, the JIT, convened by Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, includes high-ranking members from the FIA’s Cybercrime and Counter Terrorism Wings, and the Islamabad police. The committee is tasked with investigating the organized objectives of those behind the social media campaigns and prosecuting them under applicable laws.

The JIT’s establishment follows Section 30 of Peca, allowing for warranted searches and seizures relevant to the investigation. The Islamabad police headquarters will provide secretarial support to the committee.

The federal government’s proactive stance highlights its commitment to addressing cyber threats and maintaining order in the digital age.
