Five innocent children lost their lives while 12 others sustained injuries after a shell exploded in the Sarband area of Lakki Marwat on Saturday, officials confirmed.
According to the Medical Superintendent of the local hospital, the explosion occurred in a residential area where children were playing. Rescue teams responded immediately, shifting the injured to the hospital for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the deceased children have also been transported to the facility.
Hospital authorities reported that the ages of the children who lost their lives range between 2 and 7 years, deepening the sorrow over the tragic loss of such young lives.
“The injured are being provided with all possible medical assistance,” said the MS. “We are doing everything we can to stabilize their condition.”
Initial reports suggest that the shell might have been an old unexploded ordnance (UXO), but officials have not yet confirmed the cause. Law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area, and an investigation is currently underway.
This incident highlights the grave risks posed by leftover explosives in conflict-prone or previously militarized zones, particularly to civilians and children.
Local residents expressed grief and outrage over the tragedy, urging the government to conduct a thorough sweep of the area to remove any remaining hazardous materials.
The government is expected to announce compensation for the affected families, while many across the country have expressed solidarity and called for urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
