Five people sustained injuries on Monday following a gas explosion in a sewer located in Korangi’s Bilal Colony, police officials confirmed.
The incident occurred when gas accumulated in a sewer line running alongside the road, leading to a sudden explosion that caused the slab above the sewer to cave in. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) District Central, Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqui, stated that the injured individuals were immediately shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
The explosion took place at the junction of North Karachi’s Sector 5JD, creating panic among the residents. Bilal Colony police promptly reached the scene and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Relevant authorities, including municipal and gas company officials, were also summoned to investigate the incident and address the underlying issue.
Such incidents highlight the recurring problem of deteriorating urban infrastructure in Karachi, where aging sewer lines and unchecked gas leaks pose significant risks to public safety. Local residents have urged the authorities to take proactive measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the gas buildup and whether negligence was a factor in this unfortunate event.
