At least four people, including Miranshah Assistant Commissioner Shah Wali and two police officers, were martyred on Tuesday when the official’s vehicle came under attack in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Bannu Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sajjad Khan confirmed the casualties and described the attack as sudden. “After opening fire on the vehicle, the assailants also set it on fire,” he said. Authorities cordoned off the area, launching a search to locate the perpetrators. A joint operation by security forces and police is underway, and security in the area has been heightened.
Bilal Saqib, the assistant commissioner’s secretary, said the attack occurred around 10 a.m. near Mamash Khel’s Masoomabad while the official was on his way to appear in court. Besides the three confirmed fatalities in the vehicle, a civilian working in the fields was also killed. Two other police personnel sustained injuries in the attack. Investigations are ongoing.
Miranshah, the administrative headquarters of North Waziristan, lies adjacent to Bannu.
The attack drew strong condemnation from national leaders. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the lives lost, denouncing the “terrorist attack” and praying for the recovery of injured personnel. He urged authorities to ensure the immediate arrest of the attackers, emphasizing national consensus in the elimination of terrorists operating with external support.
KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also condemned the attack, calling for a detailed report from the KP police chief. “The sacrifices of the martyrs will not go in vain. The elements involved will be brought to justice,” he said, instructing authorities to provide the best medical treatment to the injured.
The incident reflects a worrying rise in terrorist attacks in KP and Balochistan, particularly following the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) cessation of its ceasefire with the government in 2022. The TTP has since vowed to target security forces, police, and other law enforcement personnel.
This development comes a day after two policemen were martyred and five others injured in a suicide bombing and gun attack in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts. In July, an assistant commissioner and a tehsildar were among five people killed in a roadside bomb attack on an official vehicle in Bajaur’s Sadiqabad area, injuring 17 others, including police personnel.
Authorities have vowed to intensify security measures and ensure swift action against those responsible for the attack.
