At least four members of a local peace committee were killed on Tuesday after unidentified armed assailants opened fire on their vehicle in the Gulbadin Landi Dak area of Bannu district, police confirmed.
According to a senior district police official, the victims were travelling together in the same vehicle when the attackers carried out indiscriminate firing, killing all four on the spot. Two of the deceased were identified as a father and son, the official added.
Local sources said the peace committee in the area had taken up arms in self-defence to resist militant activity, contributing to an already tense security situation in the district.
Police said an investigation has been launched to determine the motive and perpetrators behind the attack. However, officials cautioned that it was too early to label the incident as an act of terrorism.
Attacks on peace committee members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have seen a noticeable increase in recent months. In November 2025, seven people were killed in an attack on a peace committee office in Bannu. Earlier, in October, a member of a tribal peace committee lost his life during a clash with terrorists in the Ahmadzai area of the district.
Security forces remain on alert as authorities assess the evolving law and order situation in the region.
