Frequent Highway Accidents in Pakistan Claim Lives: Overspeeding and Negligence Among Leading Causes

Pakistan continues to grapple with frequent and fatal highway accidents, largely attributed to overspeeding, reckless overtaking, and non-compliance with traffic regulations.

In Punjab’s Attock, ten lives were lost and 22 individuals injured when a Yutong bus overturned at the Fateh Jhang Interchange on the M-14 Motorway early Monday morning. Rescue 1122, alerted at 8:08 am, dispatched six vehicles and 14 rescuers to the scene. The victims were transported to the tehsil headquarters hospital, with overspeeding identified as the probable cause.

Similar tragic incidents were reported elsewhere. In Sahiwal, ten individuals, including five women heading to a mehndi function, were injured when their bus overturned while avoiding a tractor-trolley. In Faisalabad, seven family members lost their lives, and two were injured due to heavy fog on the M-3 Motorway.

Meanwhile, in Sindh’s Naushahro Feroze district, a collision between a truck and a van on the M-6 Motorway near Moro resulted in eight fatalities and 13 injuries. The victims were traveling from a wedding in Hyderabad. Deputy Commissioner Arsalan Saleem confirmed the casualties, with 10 critically injured patients shifted to Nawabshah for advanced medical care. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed condolences, urged drivers to exercise caution, and called for the National Highway Authority (NHA) to improve road lighting.

Road safety in Pakistan remains a critical issue. In April, officials reported 97 traffic accidents on an incomplete section of the Indus Highway between Jamshoro and Sehwan over four years, resulting in 115 deaths and 317 injuries.

With road fatalities escalating, experts stress the importance of stricter law enforcement, improved road infrastructure, and awareness campaigns to ensure safer highways.
