Government to Provide Legal Representation in Criminal Cases for Those Lacking Lawyer Status

In a significant development aimed at ensuring access to justice, it has been decided that individuals without the status of lawyers will be provided legal representation at government expense in criminal cases. This decision is in compliance with the orders of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi.

To implement this decision, a two-judge committee has been formed, consisting of Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed Khan. The committee's role will be to approve the panel of Supreme Court lawyers who will represent individuals in criminal cases, ensuring that the legal process is accessible to all, regardless of their financial standing.

The committee has also invited applications from lawyers interested in joining the panel to provide legal services. Lawyers who hold a valid license to practice law in the Supreme Court are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit a photograph, a detailed introduction letter, and references, including information about their experience in handling criminal cases.

The application process will be open until January 4, 2025, and all applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by the Registrar Supreme Court. The decision to offer government-funded legal representation is a step toward ensuring that no individual is deprived of legal assistance due to lack of resources, upholding the principle of justice for all.

This initiative reflects the commitment of Pakistan's judicial system to make legal representation accessible and fair, particularly for those involved in criminal cases who may otherwise not afford a lawyer.
