POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

A Senate session turned heated on Monday after a verbal clash erupted between former caretaker Prime Minister and Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Senator Kamran Murtaza over the alleged kidnapping of General Secretary of the Bar Council, Attaullah Baloch.
The incident unfolded when Senator Kamran Murtaza raised concerns about the abduction of Attaullah Baloch, which reportedly occurred on the night of May 18 in Balochistan. Speaking in the Upper House, Murtaza condemned the incident, stating, "Advocacy is a sacred profession. This act is a direct insult to the legal fraternity. At a time when there is a sense of national unity across the country, such actions disrupt that harmony."
The situation escalated when Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar responded sharply, accusing Murtaza of prematurely blaming the security forces. "Senator Kamran Murtaza is acting like a judge and directly accusing the security institutions of involvement in the kidnapping. I strongly condemn this kind of statement," said Kakar.
In response, Murtaza asked, “Do you represent the security forces here?” Kakar replied, “Yes! I do,” leading to a fiery exchange of words between the two senators.
The debate became so intense that other members of the Senate had to intervene and ask both senators to sit down. Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Nasir stepped in and urged both leaders to maintain decorum and address the Chair while speaking.
The confrontation reflects growing tensions in the Senate regarding the situation in Balochistan and the alleged role of state institutions in suppressing dissent.
No official statement has yet been issued by the Bar Council or law enforcement agencies regarding the whereabouts of Attaullah Baloch.
The Senate is expected to resume its session with renewed calls for transparency and accountability regarding the incident.
