POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Shibli Faraz, has raised serious concerns over the exclusion of opposition members from government parliamentary delegations sent abroad, calling it a sidelining of opposition voices on crucial national issues.
During a Senate meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman Syedal Nasir Khan, Faraz acknowledged the government’s decision to send delegations overseas but regretted that no opposition representatives were included in the committees. He emphasized that the largest opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been completely left out, which undermines democratic inclusiveness and national unity.
“The government’s exclusion of the opposition from such important delegations reflects narrow-mindedness and harms the country’s interest,” Faraz stated. He further noted that PTI would independently send its own delegations abroad to ensure its voice is heard internationally. Faraz also highlighted the nation’s unity in response to recent Indian attacks but cautioned that the threat remains, urging all parties to maintain solidarity.
Addressing concerns about potential travel restrictions, Faraz appealed to the government not to place opposition members on the Exit Control List (ECL) when they travel abroad for such delegations.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar responded in the National Assembly, clarifying that government delegations traditionally comprise government members only, citing historical precedents. He acknowledged the opposition’s right to express dissent and noted that the Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Senate are reviewing the parliamentary delegation issue.
Deputy Chairman Syedal Nasir Khan confirmed that discussions are ongoing between government members and the Senate office to address the matter.
This episode highlights increasing political tensions over representation in foreign diplomatic affairs and calls from opposition leaders for a more inclusive approach to national issues to strengthen Pakistan’s unity on the global stage.
