Pakistani security forces killed two terrorists, including a high-value target, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Timergara area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower Dir district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday.
The operation, conducted on the night of April 10-11, was launched on the basis of confirmed intelligence regarding the presence of “khawarij” — a term used by the state to refer to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
“During the conduct of the operation, own troops surrounded and effectively engaged the khawarij location. After intense exchange of fire, two terrorists, including a high-value target Kharji Hafeezullah alias Kochwan, were sent to hell,” the ISPR said.
Hafeezullah was reportedly involved in multiple deadly attacks on security forces and civilians. He was a most-wanted figure with a bounty of Rs10 million placed on his head by the government, highlighting the gravity of his role in orchestrating terror activities.
Following the operation, security forces launched a “sanitisation operation” in the surrounding areas to eliminate any potential threats or terrorist presence, reaffirming their commitment to rooting out terrorism in all forms.
This operation comes amid a renewed surge in terror incidents in the country, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the end of the ceasefire by the TTP in November 2022.
Just days earlier, nine terrorists, including a ring leader, were neutralized in an IBO in Dera Ismail Khan, while another eight militants were killed in North Waziristan during a failed infiltration attempt from across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), militant violence sharply escalated in March, recording over 100 attacks — the highest monthly figure since November 2014. KP has been the hardest hit, with at least 206 deaths reported, including 49 security personnel, 34 civilians, and 123 militants.
In response to Friday’s successful operation, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued statements commending the bravery and professionalism of the security forces.
“The elimination of a terrorist ringleader is a major success,” President Zardari said, adding that operations will continue until the complete eradication of terrorism.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed this sentiment: “We will continue to thwart the evil designs of the enemies of humanity. Our war against terrorism will continue till the scourge is eliminated in total.”
The unified stance by the country’s leadership and the resolve of the armed forces signal an unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability across the nation.
