Pakistan's security forces successfully neutralised nine terrorists, including a high-value Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Takwara area of Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The operation, carried out on the night of April 6-7, was launched following credible intelligence on the presence of militants.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation resulted in the killing of nine terrorists — referred to as "khwarij" by the state — after a fierce exchange of gunfire. Among those killed was TTP ring leader Shireen, a high-value target wanted for multiple terrorist attacks, including the brutal killing of Captain Hasnain Akhtar on March 20.
“During the conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged the khwarij location and after an intense fire exchange, nine khwarij, including HVT Shireen, were sent to hell,” the ISPR stated.
A cache of weapons and ammunition was also recovered from the militants. A sanitisation operation is underway in the area to ensure no remnants of the militant network remain active.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the bravery and professionalism of the security forces. In separate statements, both leaders reiterated Pakistan's unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorism and restoring peace across the country.
President Zardari stated that operations would continue until every terrorist threat is eliminated, while Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed national unity in the fight against terrorism, saying, “The entire nation stands behind our security forces.”
This operation comes at a time when Pakistan is experiencing a resurgence in militant violence, particularly in KP and Balochistan, following the TTP’s withdrawal from a ceasefire in late 2022. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) shows that March saw over 100 militant attacks — the highest monthly tally since November 2014.
Just a day before this operation, security forces foiled an infiltration attempt on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan, killing eight terrorists and injuring four others.
Despite rising attacks, the government has ruled out launching a new large-scale military operation, focusing instead on intelligence-based, targeted actions.
Pakistan’s security forces remain resolute in their mission to uproot terrorism and safeguard the country’s sovereignty and peace.
