LEGAL
In the ongoing legal battle related to the 190 million pound case, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have signed the power of attorney in the jail courtroom. The legal move paves the way for their appeal, expected to be filed in the Islamabad High Court in the next few days.
Signing of Power of Attorney
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, both accused in the 190 million pound case, signed the power of attorney in the courtroom at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. The power of attorney was then handed over to PTI lawyer Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry by the jail authorities. This step is part of the preparation for an appeal against the verdict.
Conviction in the 190 Million Pound Case
On January 17, Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the Accountability Court convicted Imran Khan in the 190 million pound reference, sentencing him to 14 years in prison. His wife, Bushra Bibi, was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Additionally, Imran Khan was fined Rs 1 million, and Bushra Bibi was fined Rs 5 million. In case of non-payment, Imran Khan would face an additional 6 months in prison, while Bushra Bibi would serve another 3 months in jail.
The case stems from allegations that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi acquired substantial land and financial assets from Bahria Town Limited in exchange for legitimizing the Rs 50 billion sent to Pakistan by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA). The NCA had recovered £140 million in a money laundering case against Malik Riaz and his family.
Background of the Case
The 190 million pounds case revolves around the alleged illegal acquisition of land for Al-Qadir University, which was part of an agreement during Imran Khan’s tenure as Prime Minister. The case alleges that the money, which was meant to be deposited into Pakistan’s national treasury, was used instead to settle Bahria Town Karachi’s outstanding dues.
The appeal process, now underway, is expected to challenge the court’s verdict, with Barrister Salman Safdar, Salman Ikram Raja, and Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry representing the couple in the Islamabad High Court.
