POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
PTI founder Imran Khan’s sisters abandoned their usual sit-in near Adiala Jail on Tuesday, opting instead to lead a protest rally in Islamabad after being repeatedly denied meetings with the incarcerated ex-prime minister.
Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan, and Noreen Khan Niazi, along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, have tried to meet Imran over the past several weeks despite a court order from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) mandating jail visits twice a week.
According to PTI media coordinators, the sisters abruptly ended their sit-in and moved toward Murree Road for the protest rally. A video shared on X showed party supporters and workers leaving the sit-in area on foot and in vehicles.
“Even today, Chairman Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were not granted a meeting with family,” the PTI captioned the video.
During the day, the sisters and party leaders held a Quran khwani at the site before police partially cleared the route, allowing them to advance. Uzma Khan noted that authorities initially forced the demonstrators onto a dirt road. She called on the public to participate in the nationwide wheel-jam strike on February 8, promising it would “jam the whole country.”
The PTI leadership accused authorities of criminal negligence and harassment, alleging that police demanded bribes from supporters and refused to allow power of attorney signatures (vakalatnama) to be signed. Aleema Khan emphasized that the demonstrators sought Imran’s release, not just visits.
Adviser to the KP Chief Minister, Shafiullah Jan, stated that PTI workers are increasingly stopped further from the jail — 8 km away on Tuesday compared to 3 km previously. He praised Chief Minister Afridi for personally monitoring provincial matters and supporting PTI initiatives.
PTI Islamabad President Amir Mughal reaffirmed the party’s determination to mobilize the masses, highlighting that Imran continues to face 60 first information reports while still appearing at Adiala Jail every Tuesday.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail since August 2023 in a £190 million corruption case. He also faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the May 9, 2023 protests. Earlier, a UN special rapporteur warned that his detention conditions could amount to inhuman or degrading treatment and urged Pakistani authorities to adhere to international norms.
