Interior Minister: PTI Protesters Armed, Security Heightened in Islamabad

Federal Interior Minister Senator Mohsin Naqvi has accused Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists of coming to Islamabad armed, as they prepare for a major protest at D-Chowk today. Speaking to the media at the site, Naqvi emphasized that while everyone has the right to protest, no one will be allowed to damage property or compromise public safety.

“We respect the right to protest, but PTI protesters are arriving with weapons, which is unacceptable,” Naqvi stated. He clarified that none of the government forces are armed, as seen in videos and photos. However, the situation is becoming dangerous due to the reported presence of weapons among protesters.

The interior minister also addressed Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Ali Amin Gandapur, urging him to reconsider his stance. “He is a Pakistani and has the entire province of KP to protest in. He should think carefully about his actions. Protesting is a right, but this method is not appropriate,” Naqvi added.

Ali Amin Gandapur, however, has vowed to reach D-Chowk despite the security measures, saying, “Even if I have to go alone, I will reach D-Chowk.” PTI activists from various parts of the country, particularly from KP, have been making their way towards the capital, increasing tensions in the city.

Naqvi further explained that extraordinary security arrangements have been put in place, especially given the presence of foreign dignitaries in Islamabad for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. “The safety of our foreign guests is paramount. We’ve taken additional security measures for their protection,” he said, apologizing for the inconvenience caused to the public.

Authorities have blocked major entry points to the city, and law enforcement is on high alert to prevent any violent confrontations. Naqvi reiterated that security forces are prepared to take action against anyone who tries to disturb the peace or endanger lives.

The PTI protest comes amid rising political tensions and a series of rallies against the government’s actions, particularly in response to the imprisonment of PTI founder Imran Khan and the delay in implementing the Election Commission of Pakistan’s reserved seats verdict.
