Israeli Tank Fire Kills Over 50 Civilians Seeking Aid in Gaza Amid Mounting Violence

At least 51 Palestinians were killed and around 200 wounded on Monday after Israeli tanks fired on a crowd gathered near aid trucks in Khan Younis, one of the deadliest attacks in recent weeks amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Eyewitnesses said thousands had gathered on the main eastern road of Khan Younis, hoping to receive food aid distributed by trucks traveling through the area. According to survivors, Israeli tanks suddenly opened fire with shells on the crowd, which was trying desperately to secure flour and other essentials to feed their families.

Alaa, an eyewitness speaking at Nasser Hospital, described the horrific scene: "No one is looking at these people with mercy. The people are dying, torn apart trying to get food for their children."

Medics at the overwhelmed hospital reported over 200 injuries, with at least 20 people in critical condition. Due to a shortage of ambulances, wounded victims were transported in civilian vehicles, rickshaws, and even donkey carts.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, stating that troops fired after a crowd approached an aid truck stuck near their position in Khan Younis. The IDF said it regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians and is reviewing the incident's details.

Beyond Khan Younis, at least 14 more Palestinians were killed in separate Israeli gunfire and airstrikes in Gaza on Monday, raising the day's death toll to at least 65.

The attack reflects the ongoing humanitarian crisis as Gaza’s population of 2.3 million remains under partial blockade, with aid delivery tightly controlled by Israeli-backed organizations. The United Nations has criticized the system as insufficient and dangerous for civilians, while Israel argues it prevents Hamas militants from diverting aid supplies.

Since the outbreak of war in October 2023, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel, the conflict has caused catastrophic losses, including nearly 55,000 Palestinian deaths and massive displacement. The population is now caught in a severe hunger crisis worsened by the blockade and ongoing hostilities.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high, with Israeli strikes on Iran following increased conflict, and mixed reactions among Gaza residents regarding Iran’s missile attacks on Israel.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, calls for accountability and urgent aid continue to grow louder amid escalating violence and suffering in the region.
