Senior Supreme Court Judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah has proposed the establishment of a dedicated Climate Court in Pakistan to address the growing climate challenges faced by the nation.
Speaking at an international climate change conference in Islamabad, Justice Shah emphasized the need for a climate accountability system. "The world is facing significant climate challenges. Pakistan must establish a Climate Change Authority and a Climate Change Fund," he said.
Call for Climate Accountability
Justice Shah highlighted the critical importance of legal mechanisms to ensure climate accountability and sustainability in Pakistan, stressing that the proposed Climate Court could play a pivotal role in this regard.
Government Officials Stress Green Initiatives
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb also addressed the conference, stating that Pakistan had made progress on the macroeconomic front. However, he identified rapid population growth and climate change as two significant challenges for economic stability. "We are considering green climate funds and need to increase capacity alongside financing," he added.
Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the urgency of adopting green initiatives. "We must move towards a green Pakistan without delay. Climate change is part of the Udan Pakistan program. Pakistan must lead by example," he said.
KP’s Solar Transition
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin announced plans to transition buildings in the province to solar power. "We are working on several green projects to make KP a green province," he stated.
World Bank's Commitment to Climate Resilience
World Bank representative Valerie Hickey highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on the poor. "Climate change threatens to halt the process of lifting people out of poverty. Los Angeles did not catch fire because of Pakistan. The World Bank will finance Pakistan for food security," she assured.

The conference underscored the importance of collective efforts from the government, judiciary, and international organizations to tackle climate challenges and ensure a sustainable future for Pakistan.
