An anti-corruption court on Thursday acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in the long-standing Ramzan Sugar Mills case. The decision came after both the defence and prosecution concluded their arguments.

The case, which dates back to 2018, was initiated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The bureau accused PM Shehbaz, then serving as Punjab's chief minister, and his son Hamza of causing a Rs213 million loss to the national exchequer through misuse of authority. According to NAB, the funds were allegedly used to construct a drain in the Chiniot district, primarily for the benefit of Ramzan Sugar Mills, owned by Shehbaz’s sons, Hamza and Suleman.

The legal landscape of the case shifted in October 2024 when amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 restricted NAB from prosecuting cases involving amounts below Rs500 million. Consequently, the case was transferred to the anti-corruption court due to the lower monetary value involved.

During the trial, the defence counsel, Amjad Pervaiz, argued that the case was “politically motivated.” He emphasized that the drain's construction was not a unilateral decision by the then chief minister but was instead part of a broader development scheme approved by the Punjab cabinet.

After reviewing the arguments, the court, which had previously reserved its verdict, accepted the acquittal pleas of Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz, bringing an end to the case.

This decision marks a significant legal victory for the Sharif family, which has faced multiple legal battles in recent years.
