Karachi: Two Dead, One Injured as Water Tanker Runs Over Motorcyclists

Two people lost their lives, and one was critically injured in a tragic accident involving a water tanker on Karachi’s Shaheed-i-Millat Road on Friday.

According to the Chhipa Information Bureau, the incident occurred near the Shaheed-i-Millat Bridge. A water tanker ran over three individuals riding a motorbike, killing two on the spot and leaving one critically injured. The victims, aged 57 and 49, were moved along with the injured 30-year-old to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The identity of the injured individual is yet to be confirmed.

Traffic on Shaheed-i-Millat Road was temporarily disrupted, with authorities urging commuters to seek alternative routes via the Traffic Helpline 1915.

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori expressed deep concern over the accident, highlighting the increasing danger posed by water tankers and other heavy vehicles in Karachi. “Water tankers are becoming a cause of death due to frequent accidents,” the governor said in a statement, calling for a detailed report from Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of his support during this tragic time.

A City Plagued by Reckless Driving
The metropolis frequently witnesses fatal accidents due to a combination of poor infrastructure, untrained drivers, and disregard for traffic regulations. Larger vehicles such as buses, tankers, and dumper trucks are often involved in these incidents, making Karachi’s roads some of the most dangerous in the country.

Trauma specialists report that approximately 500 road accident victims, mostly motorcyclists, are brought to Karachi’s emergency units daily, highlighting the severity of the city’s traffic safety crisis.

Recurring Tragedies on Karachi’s Roads
The latest accident is not an isolated incident.

  • July 2023: A jet fuel tanker detached from its truck and overturned on a car at the Baloch Colony flyover, killing the car’s driver.
  • September 2023: An enraged mob torched two water tankers after a motorcyclist was run over on University Road near Safari Park.
  • October 2023: Two minor brothers were killed, and another was critically injured after being hit by a speeding water tanker.

Call for Accountability
Citizens and authorities alike have raised concerns about the lack of enforcement of traffic laws and the dangerous condition of Karachi’s roads. The latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations on heavy vehicles and better training for drivers to prevent further loss of life.
