A Karachi University student lost her life on Friday in a tragic accident after being run over by a campus bus, police confirmed.
According to Traffic Police Inspector Akmal Rai, the victim was a second-year student in the Department of Social Work. The incident occurred near the Mehmood-ul-Hassan Library, where the student got off the bus and attempted to cross the road.
Police reports stated that as she crossed, another bus passed by, and a university bus (registration number EB-0333) tried to overtake it, striking the student from the driver’s side. The collision knocked her to the ground, and the same bus ran over her, resulting in instant death.
Protests Erupt at Campus
The horrifying accident sparked anger and protests among students inside the university premises. Many gathered to demand strict action against those responsible and called for improved transport safety measures on campus.
Inquiry Committee Constituted
Following the incident, the University of Karachi administration issued an official notification on October 10, announcing the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
According to the notification, Prof. Dr. Naima Saeed, Chairperson of the Department of Criminology, has been appointed as the convenor of the committee. Other members include the in-charge of transport at NED University, a final-year student of social work, M. Alam, and another student representative, Ms. Sarwat.
“The committee is instructed to investigate the incident and submit its report within 15 days,” the notification stated.
Call for Accountability
Students and faculty have demanded accountability and preventive measures to ensure such tragic incidents are not repeated. They urged the administration to review campus traffic management, bus maintenance, and driver training standards to safeguard student lives.
The inquiry report, expected within two weeks, will determine the responsibility for the fatal accident and recommend steps for future safety protocols.
