KP CM Sohail Afridi Seeks Meeting With Imran Khan at Adiala Jail

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Thursday reached a police picket near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in another attempt to meet the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, amid growing concerns over his health.

The chief minister’s visit came a day after an Islamabad court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Afridi in a case related to alleged misleading statements against state institutions. Despite the warrant, Afridi appeared at the Factory Naka near the jail and spoke to reporters, expressing “serious reservations” regarding the former prime minister’s wellbeing.

His visit followed PTI’s claims earlier this week that Imran Khan was suffering from a serious eye condition. On Thursday, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that Imran had undergone a medical procedure for an eye ailment at a hospital in Islamabad on Saturday night.

Reacting to the confirmation, Afridi accused the government of initially denying that Imran Khan had been shifted to a hospital and warned that the PTI would “respond strongly.” He further stated that the party did not “trust even a single statement” issued by the information minister.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s family members and party leaders have continued to protest what they describe as the denial of court-mandated meetings. Despite orders from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) restoring a twice-a-week meeting schedule, Imran’s sisters — Aleema Khan, Uzma Khanum and Noreen Khan Niazi — along with PTI workers, have not been allowed to meet him regularly.

As a result, sit-ins have been staged near Adiala Jail every Tuesday and Thursday, the days designated by the IHC for meetings with the former premier.

Anticipating Afridi’s arrival, Rawalpindi police enforced strict security measures. Police pickets were established near the jail gate, Shaigan Healthcare factory, and in surrounding areas including Dahgal and Gorakhpur. Female police officers were also deployed along Adiala Road.

Additional checkpoints were set up at toll plazas on the M1 (Islamabad–Peshawar) and M2 (Lahore–Islamabad) motorways, while security personnel were stationed at key locations across the city, including Committee Chowk, Liaquat Bagh, GPO Chowk, Chungi No. 22, Khawaja Corporation Chowk, Gulshanabad Chowk, Thalian and Chakri Interchange.

Speaking to the media, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the party had submitted a list of approved visitors to the prison administration in line with IHC directives. “All individuals mentioned in the list are present here today,” he said, adding that they would not leave without meeting Imran Khan, calling it his “basic human right.”

Raja also criticised the prison administration for secretly transferring the PTI founder to PIMS for treatment without informing his family or allowing his personal physician to be present. According to media reports, Imran’s sister Uzma Khan was last permitted to meet him on December 2.

Earlier this month, the PTI moved the IHC seeking permission to meet Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in prison, as well as an end to what it termed their unlawful solitary confinement.
