Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Dismisses PTI’s February 8 Protest as Ineffective

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Monday claimed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is facing severe internal divisions, asserting that any protest planned by the party on February 8 poses no serious threat to the government.

Speaking to the media, Asif said that PTI has fragmented into five to six small groups, which limits the effectiveness of its proposed nationwide demonstrations.

“PTI has created a lot of noise over the last one and a half years, but its political power is gradually decreasing,” he said. “The party has suffered the most due to the poor performance of its government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is now facing consequences at the public level.”

Asif also criticized PTI’s approach to federal politics, noting that the party has shown dishonesty by refusing the post of opposition leader and is attempting to gain political benefits without taking responsibility. He further suggested that PTI’s alliance with Mahmood Khan Achakzai could collapse at any time.

The remarks come ahead of PTI’s call for a nationwide protest on February 8, marking two years since the general elections, in which the party has urged supporters to shut down businesses and block roads across the country.

Asif’s statements underline the government’s position that internal divisions within PTI will weaken the impact of any upcoming demonstrations, framing the party as politically weakened at both provincial and national levels.
