POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday passed a resolution opposing Pakistan’s participation in the Gaza Peace Board, recently announced by former US President Donald Trump and signed by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
The resolution was presented by Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi and states that Pakistan’s participation contradicts the UN Security Council’s resolutions and undermines Pakistan’s longstanding principled stance on Palestine.
According to the resolution:
· The leadership of Gaza was ignored in the Peace Board.
· The initiative appears to strengthen Israel’s ambitions while sidelining the establishment of a Palestinian state.
· Pakistan’s official position remains that Israel will not be recognized.
The resolution calls on the federal government to continue supporting the sovereignty of Palestine and Gaza and adopt a firm and principled stance against Israeli actions in the region.
KP Assembly members stressed that Pakistan should uphold its historical commitment to Palestinian rights and refrain from participating in initiatives that could legitimize Israel’s occupation or undermine Gaza’s leadership.
The move reflects provincial opposition to recent foreign policy decisions at the federal level, particularly in matters concerning Middle East diplomacy and Palestinian sovereignty.
