NA Committee Proposes Annual Govt-Funded Trip to Prophet’s Shrine

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Religious Affairs has proposed sending a parliamentary delegation to visit the Holy Shrine of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Mecca and Medina annually, with expenses borne by the government.

The committee, chaired by Shagufta Jumani, held a meeting to discuss the proposal, which would allow the delegation to offer salutations at the Holy Shrine on behalf of the Pakistani people. Families of members included in the delegation may also accompany them, though their expenses would be self-funded. In the absence of the Speaker, the chairman of the Standing Committee would lead the delegation.

Committee member Ijazul Haq suggested increasing the delegation size from seven to ten members, a proposal that received support from other committee members. The Speaker of the National Assembly would nominate the delegation members.

Chairperson Shagufta Jumani clarified that currently, the Speaker can take delegations of fifteen people, with all expenses covered by the National Assembly. The committee recommended accommodating the delegation in a hotel at government expense until the completion of the Pakistan House project in Saudi Arabia.

The committee also directed that a representative from the Foreign Office be called to declare the delegation as state guests.

Minister for Religious Affairs, Sardar Yousaf, expressed support for the initiative, calling it an honor for the parliamentary delegation to represent Pakistan at the Holy Shrine.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs added that the delegation would be provided with all necessary facilities, including medical arrangements, and the Pakistan Hajj Directorate would ensure transportation from Jeddah to the holy cities.
