A deadly armed assault by the militant group Jaish al-Adl targeted a courthouse in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province on Thursday, killing at least five people and injuring 13 others, Iranian state media reported.
The attack unfolded in Zahedan, the provincial capital, when heavily armed assailants stormed the building and threw hand grenades, causing chaos and bloodshed. A senior police official told IRNA, Iran’s official news agency, that three of the attackers were killed in a gunfight with security forces. Among the dead were a mother and her child, caught in the crossfire.
Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on its Telegram account. The group urged civilians to vacate the area for their safety, raising fears of further violence.
Eyewitness accounts shared by the Baloch human rights group HAALVSH revealed that the attackers targeted judiciary staff and security forces, with several reportedly killed or seriously injured during a raid on the judges’ chambers.
Sistan-Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, is home to Iran’s Sunni Baloch minority. The region has long experienced unrest, with locals protesting economic deprivation and alleged political marginalization. The province has also been the site of frequent skirmishes between Iranian forces and separatist or militant groups seeking greater autonomy and rights.
While attacks on judicial institutions in Iran are rare, this incident follows the shocking killing of two judges in a separate attack in Tehran earlier this year, highlighting growing concerns over internal security in the country.
The Iranian government has repeatedly accused armed groups operating in the region of having ties to foreign intelligence agencies and being involved in cross-border smuggling and insurgency efforts.
Security has been tightened across Zahedan and nearby districts following the incident as investigations continue.
