Terrorist Attack on Bannu’s Basia Khel Police Station Foiled by Brave Police Response

A major terrorist attack on the Basia Khel police station in Bannu district was successfully repelled early Friday morning, thanks to a swift and coordinated response by the police force on duty, according to an official statement.

Bannu Police Spokesperson Aamir Khan told Dawn.com that a heavily armed group of terrorists launched an assault on the police station using heavy weapons. “However, the courageous officers stationed at Basia Khel thwarted the cowardly attack,” he said, confirming that no police personnel were harmed.

The Station House Officer (SHO), Asmatullah Khan Niazi, led the defensive operation, displaying remarkable leadership. “The timely and collective action by the team forced the terrorists to retreat,” Khan added.

Senior police officials, including Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan and District Police Officer Saleem Abbasi, praised the officers' bravery, acknowledging their effective and prompt efforts in preventing significant damage and protecting fellow officers.

This latest incident comes amid a disturbing surge in terrorist violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, with a sharp increase in attacks targeting police and security forces since the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended a ceasefire agreement in 2022.

The Bannu region has witnessed multiple attacks over the past week alone:

  • Thursday: A Frontier Corps (FC) constable was martyred and two others injured in an attack in the Daryoba area.
  • Wednesday: Six FC personnel were wounded during an attack on a checkpoint.
  • Monday: Constable Hayatullah was killed while returning home from duty.
  • July 21: Over a dozen terrorists attacked the Bakkakhel police station, but officers managed to foil the plan.
  • July 19: Two police personnel were injured when terrorists used a quadcopter to target the Miryan police station.

Additionally, a sabotage attempt was prevented when explosives were discovered and defused during an intelligence-based operation in Ghoriwala.

The recent wave of attacks underscores the escalating threat faced by law enforcement agencies in KP. Despite the dangers, the resilience and dedication of the police force remain unwavering.
