At least six personnel of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) were injured in a terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in the border area of Takhti Khel, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
According to Bannu Police spokesperson Aamir Khan, unidentified terrorists launched the attack on the FC checkpoint, prompting a swift and effective retaliation by the security personnel, which forced the attackers to flee the scene.
“The injured constables have been shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Bannu for medical treatment,” Khan told Dawn.com.
He further stated that police units were dispatched to the area soon after the incident, and a search operation is underway to apprehend the perpetrators.
The attack comes amid a concerning surge in militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with security forces and police increasingly becoming targets. The rise in attacks follows the collapse of the ceasefire agreement between the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the federal government.
Bannu, in particular, has seen multiple incidents in recent weeks:
· July 23: Constable Hayatullah was martyred in a targeted terrorist shooting while returning home from duty.
· July 21: Over a dozen militants stormed a police station in Bakkakhel, but their attempt to seize the facility was foiled by police.
· Same week: An intelligence-based operation led to the recovery and defusal of explosives in Ghoriwala town, preventing a major sabotage attempt.
· July 19: Terrorists carried out a rare quadcopter attack on the Miryan police station, injuring two officials, including a senior officer.
Law enforcement authorities have expressed deep concern over the increasingly bold tactics used by militants, including drone-assisted strikes, targeted killings, and coordinated assaults on police facilities.
Security analysts point out that Bannu’s proximity to the border regions and tribal belt makes it a strategic target for insurgent groups aiming to destabilize the province.
Efforts continue to beef up intelligence and strengthen checkpoint defenses in sensitive areas, as security forces remain on high alert across KP.
