MQM-P Opposes 24/7 Cargo Traffic on Lyari Expressway, Cites Infrastructure Concerns

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has voiced opposition against the decision to open the Lyari Expressway for cargo traffic round the clock, citing concerns over potential damage to the road infrastructure and inconvenience to citizens.

In a statement issued by MQM-P leader Syed Mustafa Kamal, it was emphasized that the Lyari Expressway was originally designed for light traffic. Allowing heavy cargo vehicles to use it continuously could lead to deterioration of the road and cause inconvenience to commuters.

Syed Mustafa Kamal further stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had been misinformed regarding the suitability of the Lyari Expressway for heavy traffic. Instead, he suggested that the Northern Bypass should be utilized for heavy cargo traffic to avoid any negative impact on the Lyari Expressway.

The MQM-P leader called upon the Prime Minister to intervene immediately and reconsider the decision to allow 24/7 cargo traffic on the Lyari Expressway.

Recently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed authorities to keep the Lyari Expressway open for cargo traffic round the clock to facilitate uninterrupted movement of goods to and from the Karachi Port Trust. He also proposed connecting the Malir Expressway to further enhance logistics efficiency.

During a meeting focused on Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority, and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), PM Shehbaz emphasized the need to optimize maritime trade potential and accelerate economic growth. He instructed authorities to streamline customs clearance processes and install modern scanning equipment at ports to enhance operational efficiency.

The decision to open the Lyari Expressway for 24/7 cargo traffic reflects government efforts to bolster trade facilitation and infrastructure development in Karachi.
