New York: U.S. sprinting sensation and Olympic triple gold medalist Gabby Thomas has announced her withdrawal from upcoming competitions after struggling with a worsening Achilles injury.
Thomas, 28, dominated the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning gold in the 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m relays, but revealed that she has been dealing with Achilles issues since May, which intensified in July, according to NBC Sports.
In a statement, Thomas admitted the decision was difficult but necessary for her long-term health and athletic future. “I understand that it will be disappointing for some track fans to hear this news, but I’ve finally come to the realisation that it’s OK to be human and take care of myself,” she said.
The Harvard graduate and track star emphasized the importance of prioritizing recovery over relentless competition. “As an athlete, you always want to keep grinding, but sometimes you simply can’t outwork an injury. Sometimes it’s about patience and making the right decision for the long term.”
Thomas also expressed support for her teammates competing internationally. “All the best to my Team USA teammates fighting for medals in Tokyo,” she added.
The news comes as a setback for Team USA, which counted on Thomas’s explosive speed and consistency on the track. However, sports analysts believe her decision reflects a growing recognition among elite athletes about the need to balance ambition with self-care.
Thomas has not announced a timeline for her return but remains optimistic about competing again once she has fully healed.
