Pakistan Condemns Deadly Drone Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Sudan

Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned a deadly drone attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan’s Kadugli, which claimed the lives of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and left several others injured. The Foreign Office described the incident as a “heinous” act and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

According to Bangladesh’s armed forces, at least six peacekeepers were killed and eight wounded when a drone attack targeted a UN base on Saturday in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan. The attack reportedly occurred at the Kadugli Logistics Base under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (Unisfa).

In an official statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. The statement extended Pakistan’s heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh and expressed solidarity with the families of the fallen peacekeepers.

The Foreign Office paid tribute to the role of UN peacekeepers, noting that they remain at the forefront of international efforts to prevent conflict, protect civilians, and promote peace in volatile regions. It added that the Blue Helmets made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty for peace and stability.

Calling the attack “cowardly,” the FO urged a swift and transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure accountability. It also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with members of the UN Security Council and the wider international community to strengthen the safety and security of UN peacekeeping personnel worldwide.

Bangladesh is among the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions and has long deployed its troops in high-risk conflict zones, including the Abyei region.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s armed forces said the drone attack was carried out by separatist armed groups between 3:40pm and 3:50pm local time on Saturday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the attack, describing assaults on UN peacekeepers as unjustifiable and potentially constituting war crimes. He offered condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Abyei region remains a flashpoint between Sudan and South Sudan, which split in 2011 after decades of civil war but continue to dispute the status of several border areas.
