Pakistan Navy Launches Fourth Hangor-Class Submarine ‘Ghazi’ in China

The Pakistan Navy on Wednesday marked another major milestone in its modernisation drive with the launch of its fourth Hangor-class submarine, named Ghazi, at the Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

In a statement, the military’s media wing said that with the launch of Ghazi, all four Hangor-class submarines being constructed in China are now undergoing rigorous sea trials and are in the final stages of being handed over to Pakistan.

The ISPR recalled that Pakistan and China had signed an agreement for the acquisition of eight advanced Hangor-class submarines. Under the deal, four submarines are being built in China, while the remaining four will be constructed in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Limited (KS&EW) under a transfer of technology arrangement.

According to the statement, the Hangor-class submarines will be equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and advanced sensors, enabling them to engage targets at standoff ranges. The ISPR described the submarines as a critical addition to Pakistan Navy’s operational capabilities, stating that they would play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The launch ceremony was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, reflecting the growing depth of bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.

The Pakistan Navy had earlier launched the first Hangor-class submarine in April 2024, followed by the second and third units on March 15 and August 15 this year, respectively.

The Hangor-class is a diesel-electric attack submarine equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology, allowing it to remain submerged for extended periods and operate over longer distances without resurfacing, significantly enhancing stealth and endurance.

The class is named after the historic PNS Hangor, which gained global recognition during the 1971 Pakistan-India war by becoming the first submarine since World War II to sink an enemy warship, an Indian frigate. After its decommissioning, the submarine was preserved and is now on display at the Pakistan Maritime Museum in Karachi.
