POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev met in Islamabad on Tuesday, agreeing to activate anti-terrorism dialogue and enhance security cooperation between Pakistan and Russia.
The meeting follows a series of high-level engagements between the two countries, including the October 2024 visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Islamabad for the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
Counterterrorism & Security Cooperation
According to the Interior Ministry, both leaders emphasized the need for joint efforts to combat terrorism and drug trafficking, stressing that global security challenges require multilateral cooperation.
"Terrorism is a global challenge, and only joint multilateral actions can control this scourge," read the official statement.
Ambassador Khorev also invited Pakistani officers to attend anti-narcotics training programmes in Moscow and Siberia, further strengthening intelligence-sharing and security ties.
The two sides also agreed to increase bilateral exchanges, fostering greater collaboration in counterterrorism, law enforcement, and security operations.
Expanding Bilateral Relations
Beyond security, Pakistan and Russia have been exploring cooperation in various sectors:
🔹 Trade & Economy: Both countries have pursued barter trade agreements, including the exchange of chickpeas, lentils, rice, mandarins, and potatoes.
🔹 Defence: In October 2024, Pakistan and Russia held a joint military exercise, Druzhba VII, reaffirming their commitment to deeper security cooperation.
🔹 Education & Tourism: Last week, Russian officials discussed student exchange programmes and boosting tourism with a delegation led by Honorary Consul Habib Ahmed in Lahore.
Pakistan’s BRICS Membership & Strategic Ties
During PM Mishustin’s visit, former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Russia for supporting Pakistan’s bid to join BRICS, marking a step toward greater economic and geopolitical alignment.
With growing collaboration in energy, industry, connectivity, science, and technology, Pakistan and Russia continue to strengthen their partnership on multiple fronts.
Future Engagements
The Interior Ministry emphasized that Pakistan would continue promoting bilateral contacts to enhance diplomatic, security, and economic relations with Russia.
With increasing diplomatic engagement, joint security efforts, and expanding trade ties, the Pakistan-Russia partnership appears poised for deeper collaboration in the coming years.
