POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to approve its pending request to include the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) in the sanctions list, citing recent terrorist attacks that have killed dozens of civilians.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, made the appeal during a Security Council session focused on the threats posed by terrorism to international peace and security.
In his address, Asim Iftikhar highlighted that since the Taliban regained power in Kabul, proxy terrorist groups—including the Fitnat-ul-Kharij Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Fitnat-ul-Hindustan BLA along with its Majeed Brigade—have gained a “new lease of life” under foreign patronage and funding.
“These groups operate with almost complete impunity from Afghan soil, with the active support of our eastern neighbor, and are responsible for serious and brutal attacks inside Pakistan,” he said.
The Pakistani diplomat added that just last week, the BLA claimed responsibility for multiple attacks in Balochistan, resulting in the martyrdom of 48 innocent civilians. He emphasized the need for the international community to act decisively against terrorist organizations that threaten regional and global security.
The call to the UNSC underscores Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and seek global cooperation to hold cross-border militant groups accountable for their attacks.
