PM Shahbaz Warns of Afghan Terror Threat, Calls for Global Peace at World Peace Forum

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday warned of a new threat of terrorism emerging from Afghanistan and called on the international community to press the Afghan government to fulfill its responsibilities. He made the remarks while addressing the World Peace Forum in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Commending the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Peace, Shahbaz Sharif emphasized that Pakistan is committed to promoting global peace and that peaceful resolution of conflicts remains a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy.

The Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s active role in supporting peace efforts in Gaza, expressing gratitude to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Iran for their cooperation in facilitating a ceasefire. He noted that Security Council Resolution 2788 aligns with Pakistan’s vision and underscored the need for a long-term ceasefire and humanitarian aid in the Middle East.

Shahbaz Sharif also linked sustainable peace with sustainable development, stressing the importance of fair access to advanced technologies, financial inclusion, and women’s participation in the economic mainstream. He presented Pakistan’s clean and green development model as a global example in addressing climate change and inequality, which pose major challenges to developing countries.

“The forum should be transformed into practical measures,” the Prime Minister said. “The world must move away from zero-sum thinking and adopt joint cooperation, not just trade. It is necessary to build bridges that connect people and ideas.”

Shahbaz Sharif’s address focused on the intertwined goals of peace, development, and climate action, positioning Pakistan as a proactive player in regional stability and global cooperation.
