POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday welcomed Hamas’s response to US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, calling it a crucial opportunity to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.
In a late-night announcement on Friday, Trump urged Israel to stop bombing Gaza after Hamas agreed to release hostages and accept parts of a US-drafted peace plan. While issues such as disarmament remain unresolved, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed Israel was preparing to implement the first stage of the plan following Hamas’s statement.
The development was hailed globally, with Pakistan joining the chorus of support. “Alhamdolillah, we are closer to a ceasefire than we have been since this genocide was launched on the Palestinian people,” PM Shehbaz wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to the Palestinian cause, saying: “Pakistan has always stood by the Palestinian people and shall always do so.”
The prime minister also extended gratitude to Trump and the leaderships of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Türkiye, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia, who, along with Pakistan, met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to push for a ceasefire. “The statement issued by Hamas creates a window for a ceasefire and ensuring peace that we must not allow to close again,” Shehbaz said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also described Hamas’s response as a “welcome step,” stressing that it must now result in an “immediate ceasefire, end to Palestinian suffering, ensure hostages release, and allow free flow of humanitarian aid.” He reiterated Pakistan’s “unwavering support” for a sovereign Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
Later, Dar spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss regional developments and ongoing diplomatic engagements among the eight Arab-Islamic nations and the United States in New York. The Foreign Office (FO) said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a just and lasting peace in Gaza based on the two-state solution.
In another statement, the FO welcomed Hamas’s response, terming it “an important opportunity to secure an immediate ceasefire, end bloodshed, release hostages and prisoners, and pave the way for a credible political process toward lasting peace.” It appreciated Trump’s role in facilitating peace efforts and underscored Pakistan’s readiness to contribute constructively.
“Pakistan reaffirms its principled support for the Palestinian cause and stands in complete solidarity with the Palestinian people in their just struggle to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination,” the FO said, reiterating support for a contiguous Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
The latest statements highlight Islamabad’s active diplomatic role in global efforts to end the Gaza conflict, underscoring both its alignment with Arab and Islamic countries and its commitment to international peace frameworks.
