POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday laid the foundation stone of the Shaheen Chowk Underpass project in the federal capital, aimed at permanently resolving traffic congestion and improving travel convenience for citizens.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said that the new project would not only ease traffic flow but also further enhance Islamabad’s beauty. “This is a continuation of efforts to eliminate traffic jams in the city,” he said, commending Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his team for their “day-and-night efforts” in completing development projects with speed and quality.
“These projects are being completed in record time and with better standards,” Shehbaz added. “I congratulate Mohsin Naqvi and the CDA for increasing the beauty of Islamabad. The SCO summit is due in one and a half to two years, and hotel development and infrastructure improvement are crucial. The government will fully support quality projects.”
Speaking at the event, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that Shaheen Chowk, located on Margalla Road at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Khayaban-e-Iqbal, often experienced severe traffic jams. “The CDA team has done excellent planning to ensure the city’s aesthetics remain intact,” he noted.
Naqvi announced that construction on Eleventh Avenue would begin soon and briefed the prime minister about ongoing and upcoming development projects, including the T-Chowk flyover, which is expected to be inaugurated in December.
He also revealed plans for a new international-standard convention center, four times larger than the existing one, with groundbreaking scheduled for January 1. “A major transformation will be visible in Islamabad within this year,” Naqvi added.
The underpass project will be executed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) through its own financing, with consultancy services provided by NESPAK. According to officials, the project will significantly improve traffic flow and is considered a vital step toward creating a more modern and efficient Islamabad.
