A police constable was killed on Wednesday during a crossfire between two rival groups at Rustam Bazaar in Wana, Lower South Waziristan, officials reported.
Constable Islamuddin Wazir, deployed on law-and-order duty in the busy marketplace, sustained critical injuries and succumbed on the spot, police confirmed. “He was performing his official duties to maintain peace and public safety when he was hit by bullets during the crossfire,” authorities said.
Following the incident, panic spread through the market, prompting police to cordon off the area and regain control. Two suspects involved in the firing have been arrested, and an FIR has been registered at the CTD South Waziristan police station. DSP Wana Imranullah stated that raids are ongoing to apprehend other suspects and bring all responsible parties to justice.
The funeral prayers for the martyred constable were offered with full state honours at Police Lines, Wana, attended by senior government and police officials, family members, and local elders. He was later laid to rest in his native village, Sanga, in Tehsil Shakai.
Police in Lower South Waziristan paid tribute to Constable Wazir’s sacrifice and reaffirmed their commitment to protect citizens and maintain peace. “The sacrifices of martyrs will not go in vain,” they said.
Local political and social circles expressed deep sorrow and called for a strict ban on the open display and use of weapons in Rustam Bazaar and other markets to prevent similar incidents. Residents had previously voiced concerns over armed men freely moving in the area, citing rising insecurity, abductions, extortion, and bomb blasts. In May, a shutter-down strike saw hundreds protest against the deteriorating law and order situation in Wana.
