POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Islamabad, Pakistan – The government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are set to hold a second in-camera meeting on January 2, 2025, as part of ongoing negotiations to address contentious issues, including the release of jailed PTI workers and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26.
According to a notification available with Dawn.com, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will chair the meeting, scheduled to take place at 11:30 am at the Parliament House.
The negotiations follow a December 26 announcement by Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who confirmed PTI’s plan to formally give the government a deadline until January 31 to conclude talks. Opposition Leader Omar Ayub is expected to present this deadline during the January 2 meeting.
Tensions between the PTI and the government have remained high since the incarceration of PTI founder Imran Khan last year, following a series of legal cases. The party has held multiple protests, many of which turned violent amid allegations of state repression. This has led to discussions on banning the party, but recent negotiations have signaled a shift toward dialogue.
In response to NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s recommendation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a committee to facilitate talks. The first round of discussions aimed to ease political tensions, with both sides softening their stances to pave the way for meaningful dialogue.
As the January 2 meeting approaches, hopes for a resolution remain guarded, with both parties under significant pressure to address lingering grievances and prevent further political unrest.
