PTI Condemns Alleged Abduction, Torture of Lawyer Ali Zaman and Brother

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged abduction and torture of Supreme Court lawyer Ali Zaman and his brother Wasim Zaman, describing the incident as part of what it termed a broader pattern of human rights violations against party members.

Ali Zaman is a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Bar Council and a former provincial assembly candidate, while his brother Wasim Zaman serves as deputy general secretary of PTI Peshawar.

In a statement posted on X, the party alleged that Pakistan is witnessing a “complete collapse of human rights,” citing multiple instances of alleged torture involving its leaders and workers. PTI named Advocate Ali Zaman, former MPA Raja Azhar, and former MNA Fahim Khan as three separate cases in which it claimed torture was carried out by state authorities.

Allegations of Abduction and Torture

According to PTI, Ali and Wasim Zaman were allegedly abducted from Kachehri Chowk on Tuesday by unidentified individuals travelling in unregistered vehicles. The party claimed the brothers were held in illegal custody for several hours, subjected to “brutal and inhuman torture,” and later released.

The party termed the alleged actions a serious abuse of power and accused authorities of attempting to intimidate and silence Imran Khan as well as party leaders, workers, and elected representatives.

PTI questioned the state of governance and the rule of law, arguing that if a senior lawyer and elected bar council member could not be protected despite pursuing constitutional and legal avenues, it raised serious concerns about justice and security in the country.

Later on Tuesday, PTI-affiliated social media accounts claimed that Ali Zaman had been released, though no official confirmation from authorities was available at the time.

Leadership Reactions

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan described the alleged abduction as “very worrying, condemnable and a clear violation of the law,” demanding Zaman’s immediate release.

Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said, “Journalists, lawyers and every citizen are under the grip of fascism today,” adding that targeting a member of the party’s legal team amounted to an attack on the justice process itself.

Several PTI lawmakers also issued statements condemning the incident. MNAs Junaid Akbar and Asif Khan called it a reflection of “lawlessness and the law of the jungle,” urging human rights organisations and the public to raise their voices.

Former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser criticised the government, alleging it had failed to ensure the safety of citizens. K-P Assembly Speaker Babar Swati described the incident as an attack on the rule of law and called for accountability.

K-P Law Minister Aftab Alam termed the alleged arrest a “blatant violation of human and fundamental constitutional rights,” while Local Government Minister Meena Khan Afridi described it as a “direct attack on the state writ,” warning that targeting lawyers undermines the entire justice system.

Demand for Judicial Notice

PTI held the Punjab government responsible, stating that the alleged incident occurred within its jurisdiction. The party demanded immediate action against those involved and appealed to the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court to take urgent notice.

Reaffirming its commitment to constitutional rights and democratic principles, PTI said political disagreements should not be addressed through coercion, abductions, or force, and called on civil society and human rights organisations to intervene.

There has been no official response from state authorities regarding the allegations at the time of filing this report.
