Speaker Continues NA Session Despite Quorum Indication; Multiple Bills Passed

The National Assembly on Wednesday witnessed controversy after Speaker Ayaz Sadiq continued legislative proceedings despite an indication of quorum during the session.

When the quorum was pointed out, the Speaker questioned the repeated practice of indicating quorum, reportedly stating that there was no requirement for it to be raised repeatedly. He then allowed the legislative process to proceed.

Despite the objection, the House passed several amendment bills by majority vote.

Among the key pieces of legislation approved was the Pakistani Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was passed by a majority. The House also cleared the Cannabis Management and Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill 2026, marking another significant legislative development.

Additionally, lawmakers approved the Prevention of Misuse of the Name and Symbols of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the National Archives (Amendment) Bill 2026 through majority votes.

The Assembly also passed the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2026, as well as the Islamabad Senior Citizens (Amendment) Bill 2025.

During deliberations on the senior citizens bill, an amendment proposed by MNA Aliya Kamran was put to a vote but was rejected by a majority of members present.

The session concluded after the passage of the bills and was adjourned until 11am tomorrow.

The proceedings come amid heightened political tensions in the lower house, where quorum issues and legislative pace have frequently drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers.
