PTI Leadership Seeks Imran Khan's Withdrawal of November 24 Protest Call; Barrister Gohar and Ali Amin Gandapur Deny Request
ISLAMABAD – The leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has urged Imran Khan to reconsider his call for a nationwide protest scheduled for November 24, according to sources familiar with the developments.
In a meeting held today, PTI founder Imran Khan instructed PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to take the initiative in addressing the situation. Sources revealed that both Gohar and Gandapur discussed the potential negative impacts of the protest on the country’s economy, with Gohar specifically warning that the protest could escalate tensions and hinder future efforts to mobilize workers, especially with the ongoing government crackdown.
Gohar is said to have expressed concerns about the feasibility of holding a large protest given the harsh winter weather and difficulties in mobilizing workers due to the government's crackdown. He suggested that withdrawing the protest call could be in the national interest, as it would prevent further economic damage and challenges related to organizing a protest in such conditions.
Sources also indicated that Gohar briefed Imran Khan on the internal rift between Atif Khan and Ali Amin Gandapur, which could have implications for PTI’s internal unity in the run-up to the protest.
However, Barrister Gohar later denied reports that the leadership had requested the withdrawal of the protest call. In a statement, he clarified that no such discussions regarding negotiations with the government took place during the meeting. He emphasized that Ali Amin Gandapur was tasked with reaching out to the establishment, while he himself was to contact government figures, but no formal request to withdraw the protest was made.
The PTI leadership remains divided over the future course of action, with some leaders pushing for the protest to proceed as planned, while others express concerns over its potential impact on the party and the country.
