PTI May Issue Show-Cause Notice to Former President Alvi Over Controversial Canal Project

PTI lawmaker Ali Muhammad Khan has stated that the party will issue a show-cause notice to former president Dr. Arif Alvi if allegations made by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari regarding the approval of controversial canals during Alvi’s tenure are substantiated.

The matter pertains to the recently inaugurated Cholistan irrigation project, launched on February 15 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Army Chief General Asim Munir, aimed at irrigating barren lands in South Punjab. The project has sparked significant criticism, particularly from Sindh, where concerns over water rights and resource allocation remain unresolved.

The controversy appeared to settle after the Council of Common Interests weighed in. However, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari reignited the debate on Thursday by asserting that the decision to develop the canals was taken during the caretaker government, under Alvi’s presidency.

Speaking during DawnNewsTV’s talk show Doosra Rukh on Friday, PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan emphasized that if Bilawal provided any evidence linking Dr. Alvi to the project’s approval, the party would act.

“If Bilawal has any evidence to support his claim, then he should provide it. The party will issue a show-cause notice to Alvi and question him on the matter,” Ali Muhammad said.

He further criticized Bilawal’s remarks, calling them speculative and lacking basis. “How was the project approved under President Zardari’s presence? Why didn’t he stop it before?” he questioned, suggesting the PPP should examine its own leadership’s role in the issue.

Ali Muhammad also reaffirmed PTI’s commitment to the people of Sindh, stating that the party supports their concerns and demands transparency in national projects involving inter-provincial resources.

On a separate note, he addressed the current national security environment following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir, which killed 26 people. Stressing the importance of unity in times of national threat, he said, “In matters of [potential] war, we are all one. There is no opposition when it comes to Pakistan’s defence.” He urged the government to include PTI founder Imran Khan if a multi-party conference is convened to formulate a unified stance.
