Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Emphasizes Good Governance, Denies Deprivation Claims

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday emphasized that good governance should be the true essence of politics, rejecting claims that Punjab is receiving more funds than other provinces. Speaking at the National Workshop Balochistan in Lahore, she said that every province has the resources; the problem lies in the lack of intent and will to work effectively.

“People often focus on protocol and politics after assuming office, but there is no better politics than serving the people,” she said. “Do not be deceived into thinking that any province is deprived because it does not have money. What matters is transparency, intent, and action.”

Maryam Nawaz highlighted Punjab’s inclusive policies, noting that patients from other provinces receive treatment in Punjab hospitals, particularly for heart surgeries. She added that students from across Pakistan study in Punjab’s educational institutions without discrimination. “I do not differentiate between Punjabis, Sindhis, or Pakhtuns. Dividing people weakens the country,” she said.

The Chief Minister also discussed her administration’s efforts to eliminate corruption and favoritism. “The schemes running in Punjab are not my money—they are the people’s money,” she said. “I was the first to end the culture of recommendation. I did not hire a single person on recommendation during my tenure and personally conduct 30 interviews a day.”

She further highlighted significant improvements in law and order, noting that crime rates have fallen from 100 percent to 30 percent in several areas of Punjab. Maryam Nawaz pointed to the role of CCTV monitoring, which has helped reduce crimes, traffic violations, and incidents of harassment. She said helmet compliance among motorcyclists has significantly increased, and incidents of rape and harassment have declined.

Maryam Nawaz concluded by urging leaders to prioritize governance over politics, emphasizing that politics should be a means to serve the people rather than manipulate them for personal or partisan gains.
