Punjab Police on Friday confirmed the death of the main suspect involved in a brutal rocket attack in Rahim Yar Khan's Machka area that claimed the lives of 12 police officers. The suspect, identified as Bashir Shar, was killed during a retaliatory operation by Punjab Police, which also left five of his accomplices injured.
The tragic incident occurred when two police vehicles, carrying 22 officers, came under attack by organized criminal gangs while returning from a police camp in the Katcha (riverine) area. The vehicles became stranded in the muddy terrain due to recent rains, making them vulnerable to the dacoits' assault. The gang fired rockets at the immobilized police vehicles before opening fire, resulting in the martyrdom of 11 policemen on the spot, with the death toll rising to 12 the following day.
Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar revealed that a joint operation involving 320 personnel from both Punjab and Sindh Police was launched in the riverine area to apprehend those responsible. The Punjab Police announced the successful neutralization of the main suspect through a post on social media platform X, stating, “The main suspect who attacked policemen yesterday, Bashir Shar, has reached his logical end.”
In response to the attack, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the Inspector General and other senior officials to personally oversee the situation in Rahim Yar Khan. She also instructed the Punjab home secretary to initiate an immediate and robust operation in the Katcha areas, with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) taking the lead.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has similarly ordered his police force to maintain close coordination with their Punjab counterparts and provide any necessary assistance. In light of the attack, Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has directed law enforcement agencies to enhance security measures across the province, particularly at mosques, imambargahs, and other sensitive locations during Friday prayers.
The martyred policemen were honored with funeral prayers in Rahim Yar Khan, attended by high-ranking civil and military officials, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Tributes were paid to the fallen heroes, and their bodies were sent to their hometowns for burial.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the influence of organized criminal gangs in the riverine areas of southern Sindh and central Punjab. The government has vowed to intensify efforts to restore law and order in these regions and bring those responsible for such heinous acts to justice.
