Salman Akram Raja Rejects Barrister Gohar’s Remarks on Imran Khan Meetings

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Monday termed recent remarks by party chairman Barrister Gohar as contrary to the party’s official stance, making it clear that PTI is neither “begging” nor compromising on its position regarding meetings with party founder Imran Khan.

Barrister Gohar had earlier stated that the time had come to “beg” in order to meet Imran Khan, alleging that both external elements and individuals from within the party were involved in creating hurdles. His remarks sparked debate within political circles and prompted an immediate response from the PTI leadership.

Reacting to the statement, Salman Akram Raja said that Barrister Gohar’s comments had been rejected at the party level. “This statement does not reflect the party’s stance and has been denied by PTI,” he said.

He added that Barrister Gohar spoke in haste and used an inappropriate choice of words. “We are not begging in any respect. The word ‘begging’ is completely inappropriate and unacceptable,” Raja asserted.

The PTI secretary general further maintained that the party had not committed any wrongdoing that could be used as a justification to deny meetings with the PTI founder. “There is no legal or moral basis for restricting meetings with Imran Khan,” he said.

Clarifying the party’s position on dialogue, Salman Akram Raja stated that talks with the government would only take place once what he termed “illegal restrictions” on Imran Khan were removed. “Any discussion with the government is conditional upon the restoration of basic legal and constitutional rights of the PTI founder,” he said.

The statement underscores ongoing internal sensitivities within PTI as well as the party’s firm stance against what it views as political pressure and restrictions on its leadership.
