Security forces killed 17 suspected terrorists linked to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during a major intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the military’s media affairs wing confirmed on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the overnight operation targeted militants belonging to “Fitna al Khwarij” — the state’s designation for TTP — who were described as “India-sponsored.”

“Own troops effectively engaged the khwarij location and resultantly, seventeen Indian-sponsored khwarij were sent to hell,” the ISPR said, adding that security forces recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from the site.

The militants were said to be involved in numerous terrorist activities against security personnel, law enforcement agencies, and civilians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A sanitisation operation is currently underway in the area to ensure the complete elimination of any remaining militants.

Reaffirming the state’s resolve, the ISPR stressed that security forces remain “determined to wipe out the menace of Indian-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan.”

The operation comes amid a surge in militant violence in KP and Balochistan in recent months. Following the collapse of a ceasefire deal in November 2022, the TTP vowed to escalate attacks against security forces and police across the country.

In August this year, Lakki Marwat witnessed a series of militant assaults that left three soldiers and a woman dead, while three others — including two soldiers — were injured. The latest IBO is being seen as a major blow to the group’s operational presence in the region.
