POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
During a Senate Standing Committee on Finance meeting chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Senator Faisal Vawda made a startling revelation, claiming that three Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials had threatened to kill him.
Call for Criminal Investigation
Senator Vawda demanded criminal action against the officials involved. Supporting his stance, Committee Chairman Saleem Mandviwala acknowledged receiving related messages.
Vawda further revealed, “Your letter was received on January 10, and a letter of intent was issued the same day. However, a raid was conducted on a different company than the one awarded the order.”
Committee Members Demand FIA Involvement
Committee member Senator Farooq H. Naik suggested handing the matter over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). “This threat issue should be thoroughly investigated and exposed,” he emphasized.
Chairman FBR agreed, recommending a high-level inquiry into the matter.
Revenue Shortfall Discussed
Apart from the threat allegations, the committee also discussed the Rs 386 billion revenue shortfall during the past six months.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb proposed separating policy functions from the FBR in the next financial year. He assured steps to reduce the tax burden on the salaried class and simplify tax forms.
The minister noted that only 60 to 70 percent of the salaried class is taxed, with many unaffected by the super tax.
Increase in Tax Filers Despite Inflation
FBR officials attributed the revenue shortfall to decreased inflation rates but highlighted a positive development: income tax filers have doubled to 4 million this fiscal year, compared to 2 million last year.
The committee concluded by urging immediate action on the threats against Senator Vawda and suggested a formal handover of the case to crime agencies.
