Shaheen Afridi Talks Captaincy, Team Improvement, and Backing Young Players

Pakistan’s ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has shared insights into his leadership approach, emphasizing team responsibility, player improvement, and backing emerging talent.

Speaking about the captaincy, Shaheen revealed that he consulted Mohammad Rizwan before taking the role. “Rizwan is the only player who told me that I was becoming the captain,” he said, adding that Rizwan had decided to step down from the captaincy himself. Shaheen stressed that improving the team is a collective responsibility, not just limited to senior players like Babar Azam, Saim, Rizwan, or myself.

Highlighting the current form of his teammates, Shaheen praised Babar Azam, noting he is in excellent touch and is expected to score a century soon. He also acknowledged Rizwan’s contribution, stating he has been Pakistan’s highest run-scorer since 2023.

Shaheen further explained that part of his leadership strategy is to support players who are out of form and to ensure the development of younger talent. “We want to give a chance to the boys on the bench as well. The more matches the young players play, the more they will improve,” he said.

Reflecting on his initial tenure as captain, Shaheen expressed satisfaction with winning his first series in charge, emphasizing the importance of team unity and shared responsibility.

With the Pakistan ODI squad focusing on grooming future talent while maintaining the performance of established stars, Shaheen Afridi’s leadership approach seeks to blend experience with youth, aiming to create a resilient and competitive side for upcoming international fixtures.
