POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The Sindh Assembly’s special committee has officially approved a significant salary increase for provincial lawmakers, sparking mixed reactions within the house.
The meeting of the special committee, chaired by Speaker Owais Qadir Shah, was attended by Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar and members representing the PPP, MQM, Jamaat-e-Islami, and PTI. After deliberations, the committee finalized the salary of assembly members at Rs. 450,000 per month.
Details of the Increase
Before the increment, lawmakers were drawing a basic salary of Rs. 50,000, which has now been increased to Rs. 300,000 as basic pay, with additional allowances taking the total to Rs. 450,000.
Opposition’s Objection
Jamaat-e-Islami’s Muhammad Farooq strongly opposed the hike, arguing that such a drastic raise was unjustified at a time when citizens are struggling with inflation, unemployment, and floods in parts of Sindh. He questioned the assembly’s priorities, stressing that public welfare should come before personal benefits of lawmakers.
Background and Reactions
While ruling party members defended the increase, citing parity with salaries of other provincial assemblies and the “rising cost of living,” opposition voices maintained that it sends the wrong message to the people of Sindh who are already burdened by economic hardship.
The decision is expected to spark debate outside the assembly as well, with civil society and political analysts likely to weigh in on whether such raises are justifiable in the current economic climate.
