Sindh Government Dismisses Engineer in Elevator Scandal; Advance Payments and Installation Issues Exposed

The Sindh government has dismissed Superintending Engineer Tanveer Kallor amid a scandal involving the procurement of lifts for the Sindh Secretariat. The dismissal follows revelations of a ₹27 crore advance payment to Civil and Electric Works Company for 12 lifts that were never delivered.

According to the inquiry conducted by Chief Secretary Syed Asif Haider Shah, Tanveer Kallor, who was responsible for overseeing the lift installation project, authorized contracts for the purchase of 14 lifts, including 10 passenger and 2 cargo elevators, in August 2022. The contractor received the advance payment but failed to deliver the lifts.

The issue became more complex with Kallor’s statement claiming that the lifts were supposed to come from China due to a federal import ban, which allegedly delayed their delivery. However, this explanation was deemed insufficient, leading to Kallor's dismissal with the Chief Minister’s approval.

Further investigation revealed additional problems, including the ordering of lifts from China instead of Korea and installation issues causing disruptions in the Sindh Secretariat's 7-story building. The new chapter of the inquiry is being led by technical authorities to address these complications.

The dismissal and ongoing investigations highlight the serious nature of procurement mismanagement and the need for accountability in public projects.
