Tragic Landslide on Karakoram Highway Claims Three Lives, Blocks Key Route Amid Heavy Rains

A landslide struck a passenger bus on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in the Dasu area of Upper Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two army personnel. One other passenger sustained injuries.

According to Upper Kohistan District Police Officer Mukhtiar Ahmad, the Northern Areas Transport Corporation's bus, en route to Hunza, was hit by large boulders, causing the fatal incident. The deceased include two individuals from Gilgit-Baltistan and one from Rawalpindi. The injured and deceased were promptly moved to the District Headquarters Hospital Dasu.

The landslide occurred amid a heavy downpour that has been affecting the region since Sunday night, leading to multiple blockages along the KKH between Bisham and Diamer. Rescue operations are currently underway, with passengers traveling to and from Islamabad facing significant delays due to the road closures.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Abdur Rehman reported that the heavy rains caused multiple landslides, further complicating travel along the KKH. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a weather advisory on Monday, warning of continued rains that could trigger additional landslides, increase river and stream flows, and potentially cause urban flooding.

The PDMA has urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in mountainous areas, and to take precautions during adverse weather conditions. This incident follows another tragic event on Friday when 12 members of a family perished due to the collapse of their mud house’s roof in Upper Dir, also caused by heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, authorities in Punjab have been placed on alert as monsoon rains are expected to continue until September 4, with potential risks of flooding in various regions. The PDMA in Punjab has assured that water levels in major rivers and dams are being closely monitored, and all necessary resources are being deployed to protect citizens from potential hazards.
